Biography

Soprano Julie Ludwig is a graduate of the Masters in Vocal Performance and Literature program at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) where she studied with Dr. Sophie Roland. She is a recipient of the UWO Board of Governors Award, the London Opera Guild Scholarship, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Canadian Graduate Scholarship, as well as a generous bursary from the Canadian Aldeburgh Foundation to assist her studies at the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme in Aldeburgh, England. Julie also received an Honourable Mention at the 2011 North York Concert Orchestra's Mozart Competition.

In the 2011-12 season, Julie will perform Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica with Toronto Opera Collaborative, Sophie in Werther with Opera by Request, and Oberto in Alcina with Essential Opera. She will also join the North York Concert Orchestra in an evening of music by Mozart. In October 2012, Julie will perform Despina with Jeunesses Musicales Canada in their touring production of Così fan tutte.

Recent operatic credits include Emmie (Albert Herring) conducted by Steuart Bedford at the Aldeburgh Music Festival, Laurie (The Tender Land) with Toronto's Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, Zerlina (Don Giovanni) with the UWO Opera and the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) with the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, and First Witch (Dido and Aeneas) with the Banff Centre's Opera as Theatre Program.

Particularly interested in exploring contemporary repertoire, Julie was selected to participate in Tapestry New Opera's "New Opera 101 Masterclass" in January 2012. From 2009-2010, she was a member of UWO's Contemporary Techniques Ensemble, and performed works by Arvo Pärt, Boris Blacher, and James Rolfe. With the UWO Opera, Julie performed Miss Titmouse in the Canadian première of Edwin Penhorwood's Too Many Sopranos. Additionally, Julie frequently collaborates with emerging composers, premiering new works.
